Secret cove… Or not so much?

Cala en Baster is one of the most magical and well-known places in Formentera. However, since it is a rocky cove, the usual tourist does not usually like to spend many hours there.

Therefore, if you are one of those who flee from the crowds, Cala en Baster is one of the places you should note on your agenda during your visit to Formentera. This cove is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sound and smell of the sea.

Description of Cala en Baster

Cala en Baster is a small rocky bay of about 30 meters wide with north orientation. This cove is the junction point between the peninsula of Punta Prima (where the tower of Punta Prima is located) and the coast of Es Carnatge, where there are also plenty of places to swim.

The famous boat shelter caves of Cala en Baster

In Formentera are very common the small houses to shelter the boats. You can find them in Cala Saona, Ses Xalanes beach (Illetas) and in the village of Es Caló, but in the case of Cala en Baster the fishermen did not build small houses but dug caves in the rock to shelter their boats.

Boat caves will protect you from the sun and heat during the harsh summer months and provide shade.

You can find accumulated posidonia

Depending on how the sea has behaved during the autumn and winter, posidonia may have accumulated abundantly in the cove. At the time we took the photos for this page there was no accumulated posidonia, but every winter is different and storms can wash algae ashore without warning.
