Description of Punta des Borronar beach
The beach of Punta des Borronar is located in front of the island of Espalmador, and is the northernmost tip of the island of Formentera. The beach of Punta des Borronar is a very small swimming area, about 100 meters long and 10 meters wide, shaped like a horseshoe, and is the perfect resting place after the long walk you will have to do to get there, a walk of at least 30 minutes from the last parking lot of Illetas beach.
In front of the Espalmador or n’Adolf Passage
If you dare to make the excursion on foot to the beach of Punta des Borronar you will reach the end of the isthmus of Illetas. From there you will see the island of Espalmador in front of you, barely 200 meters away, separated by an area of water barely one or two meters deep known as the Espalmador or n’Adolf pass.
Swimming across is prohibited
It seems easy to swim across, as you can literally see the beach of s’Alga de Espalmador in front of you, but the small strait is an area of water exchange between both sides, the waves come from both the east and west sides and the wind is always present.
If you try to swim across you can easily be swept out to sea by the current. Several people have already drowned here when trying to cross, being swept away by the current and not knowing how to get back to shore. Others, due to lack of knowledge of the sea and not being in good physical shape, have collapsed from exhaustion in the water.
Several warnings prohibit swimming crossings and a semi-permanent surveillance post with a lifeguard is present during the summer months. to prevent tourists arriving in this area from trying to enter the water, and so that in the event that someone is swept away by the current, someone can come to their aid.
