In 2016 the green routes Formentera were released, a total of 32 intertwined paths that reach 100 kilometers in length . These green routes are a way to integrate with nature and be able to appreciate their environment in a direct, natural and respectful way.

It is a different way to appreciate the island of Ibiza and access places that would otherwise be impossible if not on foot or by bicycle. The circuits have been adapted so that the green routes of Formentera can be completed on foot without problems, even though most of them can be done by bicycle.

If you want to make some green routes on foot on your visit to the island of Formentera, on this page you will find the complete list.

The vast majority of people prefer to do these routes on foot, equipping themselves at most with walking sticks and trekking shoes for comfort. This type of physical activity is simple and effective as aerobic exercise.

If you prefer to do the green routes by bicycle, it is advisable that you do it with a mountain bike or at least with big wheels.

The 32 green routes of Formentera

These are the 32 green routes of Formentera, choose those that represent a difficulty that you can meet satisfactorily, enjoy and progress gradually in the level of difficulty.

Route 1:
La Savina - Illetes

  • Distance: 3.3 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 50 minutes
  • By bicycle: 15 minutes

The route starts at the Port of La Savina and heads towards the salt mines of the island on a historical route in front of the beach of Cavall d’en Borràs, circulating where the salt used to circulate in wheelbarrows, passing through the channel of Sa Sequi. You can appreciate the landscape of junipers and the Molí de Sal (now a restaurant).

When you reach Ses Illetes beach you can head to Es Trucadors, the sandy tongue that at the end overlooks S’Espalmador.

The green route is easily accomplished in a time of 50 minutes walking, 15 minutes cycling for a distance of 3.3 kilometers.

Route 2:
La Savina - Sant Francesc - Es Pujols

This route also starts from the port of La Savina in a route that borders the lagoon of Estany Pudent, very interesting from a natural and ecological point of view.

Then you continue along the path of Es Brolls, without slopes, ideal for this walk, and where you can enjoy a very quiet natural environment.

At the first stop on this route you can reach Sant Francesc and then the road will take you to Es Pujols.

The route is easy and is completed in 85 minutes walking, 30 minutes cycling for a distance of 5.6 km.

Route 3:
La Savina - Cala Saona

This route starts at the port of La Savina along the Estany des Peix lagoon. The total route connects La Savina with Cala Saona while crossing the Porto-Salè area.

The route promises at the end to reach the natural bay of Cala Saona from where watching the sunset will be the best reward for your perseverance.

This green route La Savina-Cala Saona is in the medium difficulty range and takes 35 minutes by bicycle and 95 minutes on foot.

Route 4
Sant Francesc - Ses Escoles - Can Marroig

A pleasant crossing from Sant Francesc Xavier to Can Marroig, with the starting point in the area of Porto-Sale to then head towards the beautiful lagoon of Estany des Peix.

This route follows the lake along its course until reaching Can Marroig, a reconstructed farm where you can enjoy a family walk.

The ride is easily done in 20 minutes by bike, 60 minutes of walking, with an elevation gain of 39m.

Route 5:
Can Marroig - Punta De La Gavina

The green route number 5 starts from the interpretation center located in Can Marroig, the same place where the route previously mentioned in this list passes through.

This is a walk along the coast of this area of the island of Formentera, which has cliffs, wooded areas and difficult access to the sea.

The rewarding view of Es Vedrá, Es Vedranell and Eivissa surprises everyone. The end of the route is the tower of La Gavina built in 1762.

The duration of the ride on an easy route is 10 minutes by bike, a 30-minute walk, 9 m elevation gain.

Route 6:
Sant Francesc - Portossalé

A short and perfect route for a quick walk if you are in the capital of Formentera.

This route starts behind the church of Sant Francesc Xavier, passes by the restored cemetery (known as Fossar Vell de Sant Francesc), and ascends towards Dalt de Porto-salé passing in front of two of Formentera’s mills: the molí d’en Jeroni and the molí d’én Mateu.

This ride intersects with route 3 that leads to Cala Saona, it is done with a medium difficulty level of 20 minutes by bike, 40 minutes of walking and 20 m difference in height.

Route 7:
Sant Francesc - Ses Bardetes - Cala Saona

This route moves in a westerly direction leaving from the village of Sant Francesc and passing through the small urbanization of Ses Bardetes.

This is the most direct way to take from Sant Francesc Xavier to Cala Saona if you want to avoid going by road.

Medium difficulty for this green route 7 that takes 65 minutes walking and 20 minutes cycling, the total distance is 3.7 kilometers.

Route 8:
Sant Francesc - Ses Bardetes - Far De Barbaria

This route departs from Sant Francesc in a southerly direction until you enter a rural Formentera. You can see vineyards, almond, olive and fig trees in their carefully cultivated fields. At the end of the route you will reach the area of the famous Far de Barbaria.

It is a medium-difficulty route that takes 60 minutes by bicycle, 165 minutes walking for a total of 9.6 km and a 73 m difference in altitude.

Route 9:
Es Cap - Punta Rasa

A short route that starts west of Es Cap, passing through various landscapes ranging from rural, wooded, arid and rocky landscape to the maritime environment and cliffs of the area of Punta Rasa, near Cala Saona.

This area is one of the favorite places for tourists and locals to enjoy a magnificent sunset.

A walk full of discrepancies that make the views along the 2.2 kilometer route much more interesting. It takes 10 minutes by bicycle, 30 minutes on foot and is easy to execute.

Route 10:
Es Cap - Es Garroveret

In the area of Can Parra is where you start this 9 kilometer route to the area of Es Cap de Barbaria, where it culminates with the arrival to the Es Garroveret towerone of the 5 defense towers of the XVII century that were built in Formentera.

This route follows the main road that leads to Es Cap, so you can also visit the various archaeological sites in this area(Cap de Barbaria I, Cap de Barbaria II and Cap de Barbaria III).

The medium-difficulty ride is accomplished in 55 minutes of biking and 165 minutes of walking. The distance is 9.4 kilometers.

Route 11:
Es Mal Pas - Far De Barbaria

  • Distance: 9.7 km
  • Difficulty: medium
  • On foot: 170 minutes
  • By bicycle: 60 minutes

With this route, as with the previous one, you can also reach the lighthouse of es Cap de Barbaria, as well as the tower of Es Garroveret.

The route starts in the area of Es Mal Pas, in the westernmost part of the coast of Migjorn, and then crosses the Torrent de S’Alga, whose zigzagging path helps rainwater in this area to be channeled to the sea.

The level of performance in this route of Formentera is medium, in a 9.7 km route that takes 170 minutes walking or 60 minutes cycling.

Route 12:
Es Cap- Torrent de S'Alga

  • Distance: 1.8 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 30 minutes
  • By bicycle: 10 minutes

Route 12 has a road perpendicular to the main road of Es Cap.

The end of the walk takes you to Torrent de S’Alga through the well-known Camí de Can Parra, a zigzagging road where the dry stone walls that line the road stand out.

The green route Es Cap-Torrent de S’Alga is completed in 30 minutes walking and 10 minutes cycling, the level is easy for a route of 1.8 kilometers.

Route 13:
Sant Francesc - Es Mal Pas

Leaving Sant Francesc Xavier by a narrow asphalted road, you have to make your way through the cultivated fields towards the beach area of Migjorn known as Es Mal Pas.

This is a beautiful ride through pine wooded areas that takes 30 minutes by bicycle, 45 minutes walking and 2.8 kilometers.

Route 14:
Es Pujols - Es Mal Pas

  • Distance: 4.2 km
  • Difficulty: medium
  • On foot: 75 minutes
  • By bicycle: 25 minutes

The route starts in Es Pujols following the path known as Camí de Ses Vinyes, a landscape surrounded by the vineyards of the area and close to the lagoon of l’Estany Pudent.

This route passes right next to the oldest mill of Formentera, the Molino de Can Teuet, and again ends in the beach area of Migjorn known as Es Mal Pas.

A route of medium difficulty that takes 75 minutes walking and 25 minutes cycling, the distance is 4.2 kilometers with very little slope.

Route 15:
Sant Francesc - La Mola

In the route 15 Formentera you find a long route that starts in Sant Francesc Xavier and takes you to the village of El Pilar de La Mola.

During the tour, which runs in an easterly direction, you will pass next to the Roman castellum of Can Blaifurther on, you will pass by the beaches of Ses Platjetes in Es Caló de Sant Agustí and you will go up the old Roman road that leads to El Pilar de La Mola.

It is 45 minutes by bicycle, 135 minutes on foot, the total distance is 9 kilometers on an easy route.

Route 16:
Sant Francesc Xavier - Sant Ferran De Ses Roques

  • Distance: 1.8 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 30 minutes
  • By bicycle: 10 minutes

This route follows the old path of La Mola, which starts in Sant Francesc and ends in La Mola, although in this case we will stop in the village of Sant Ferran de Ses roques.

Sant Ferran has a very interesting church and its square is a meeting place for tourists and locals during the summer nights.

The landscape you will see on this route is rural, with fields cultivated with vineyards or cereal and small groups of sheep and goats.

A 30-minute walk, 10-minute bike ride and 1.8 kilometers of medium-difficulty route.

Route 17:
Sant Ferran - Es Pujols - Pudent Lake

  • Distance: 2.2 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 35 minutes
  • By bicycle: 10 minutes

This route connects the towns of Sant Ferran and Es Pujols, and is done through the old road of Ses Vinyes from where you can access the natural environment of Estany Pudent.

If you are lucky in this environment you will be able to see flamingos and other interesting aquatic birds.

The bike ride takes 10 minutes, 35 minutes if it is a walk and the distance is 2.2 kilometers with an easy slope.

Route 18:
Sant Ferran De Ses Roques - Es Pujols - Punta Prima

  • Distance: 2.2 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 35 minutes
  • By bicycle: 10 minutes

This route has two options.

The first one connects the urban centers of Sant Ferran and Es Pujols coinciding with the end of the route number 20 (let’s say it joins it).

The second option goes to the surroundings of Sa Punta Prima and its watchtower.

The total duration of this route is about fifteen minutes cycling, 40 minutes walking the 2.6 kilometers with an elevation gain of 28m, easy performance.

Route 19:
Es Pujols - Illetes

  • Distance: 4 km
  • Difficulty: difficult
  • On foot: 90 minutes
  • By bicycle: not possible

From Es Pujols to the beach of Illetes, the green route 19 will take you through some of the most beautiful beaches of the island, where in some sections you will have to walk on the sand itself.

You will start the route in Es Pujols, visiting the beaches of Es Pujols, Ses Canyes, Sa Roqueta and Levante beach, ending in the area of the beaches of Es Cavall d’en Borràs and Ses Illetes.

It is a four-kilometer hike, a difficult 90-minute journey.

The whole area belongs to the Ses Salines Natural Park.

Route 20:
Es Pujols - Es Ca Marí

  • Distance: 5 km
  • Difficulty: medium
  • On foot: 90 minutes
  • By bicycle: 35 minutes

This route joins the coasts of Llevant and Migjorn in a single line that reaches the beach area of Es Ca Marí.

The walk starts in Es Pujols, and passes through rural areas where you can see numerous dry stone walls, you can visit the tower of Es Pi des Catalá and finally reach the south coast of the island of Formentera.

A 5.1 kilometer hike that takes 35 minutes of biking and 90 minutes of walking with a 34 m elevation gain and medium difficulty.

Route 21:
Sant Ferran - Cala En Baster - Platja De Migjorn

  • Distance: 4.2 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 60 minutes
  • By bicycle: 20 minutes

Leaving the town of Sant Ferran the route first takes you to the beautiful cove of Cala En Baster, one of the most beautiful environments of the island of Formentera.

From there we follow the route eastward along the coast of Tramuntana (north) and then we will go into the more rural Formentera southward to the coast of Migjorn, specifically in the area of the beach of Es Racó Fondo.

The bike ride takes ten minutes, the hike takes 36 minutes, the distance is 2.8 km with an elevation gain of 24 m and the trail is easy.

Route 22:
Sant Ferran De Ses Roques - Es Ca Marí

  • Distance: 2.3 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 35 minutes
  • By bicycle: 17 minutes

The so-called green route of Formentera number 22 goes from Sant Ferran de ses Roques back to the area of Es Ca Marí.

This route runs through 100% rural environments where you can enjoy many of the dry stone walls typical of the island on your tour.

Easy difficulty ride over a distance of 2.3 kilometers that takes 35 minutes walking and 17 minutes biking.

Route 23:
Es Carnatge - Es Arenals

  • Distance: 2.3 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 35 minutes
  • By bicycle: 17 minutes

Only one and a half kilometers is all that is required for this green route number 23, which runs from the area of Es Carnatge closest to the beaches of Ses Platjetes in the area of Es Caló, up to the well-known Es Arenals beachBeautiful beach with many establishments and hotels.

It is a quiet ride in a wooded area of agricultural tradition, which is done in 10 minutes by bike, 25 minutes of walking and whose difficulty is of medium range.

Route 24:
Es Caló - Maryland

  • Distance: 1.4 km
  • Difficulty: medium
  • On foot: 25 minutes
  • By bicycle: 10 minutes

This is a route that connects the small fishing village of Es Caló with the coast of Migjorn, specifically the beach of Es Copinyar.

This route has some unevenness since between both coasts we will have to overcome a small slope, first uphill and then downhill to Migjorn.

If you want to extend the route a little more and visit another well-known environment, you can continue walking another five minutes until you reach the famous cove of Es Caló Des Mort.

Route 25:
Camí de Sa Pujada

  • Distance: 4 km
  • Difficulty: difficult
  • On foot: 80 minutes
  • By bicycle: not recommended

Starting from Es Caló, the famous fishing village and for several centuries the entry point to the island, you climb towards the Camí de Sa Pujada, also known as the Roman Road.

This is a very steep road that was used in ancient times and was the first known route connecting Es Caló with La Mola.

From this road the panoramic views of the island are amazing.

The route is difficult, it is an 80-minute hike with a 160-meter vertical drop over 4 km.

Route 26:
Racó De Sa Pujada - Es Ram

  • Distance: 2.4 km
  • Difficulty: difficult
  • On foot: 50 minutes
  • By bicycle: not recommended

In the green route 26 of Formentera we find some unevenness, which makes it perfect for people who want to give an extra level of trekking. For this reason it is classified as difficult.

We recommend you to do it on foot, as the route becomes steep in certain sections, but if you are skilled with the mountain bike you will enjoy this route a lot.

The exit is at the top of the Cala de Es Racó de Sa Pujada (the Roman road) and goes through a forest of junipers and pine trees until you reach the sea in the area of Es Ram.

A 50-minute hike with a 2.4-kilometer (1.2-mile) hike.

Route 27:
El Pilar De La Mola - S'Estufador - Es Ram

  • Distance: 2.4 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 85 minutes
  • By bicycle: not recommended

The departure for this tour starts at the church of Pilar de La Mola. The area of the village of El Pilar de la Mola is surrounded by cultivated fields, dry stone walls and forests.

We will start the route on wide tracks, but at a certain point in the road, it becomes narrow. Once we get to the area of s’Estufador from there we just have to get to Es Ram.

A hike that lasts 85 minutes, for 4.2 kilometers and is an easy hike because of the negative slope.

Route 28:
El Pilar De La Mola - Red Point

  • Distance: 9 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 135 minutes
  • By bicycle: 45 minutes

The main objective of this walk is to visit the well-known Molí Vell de la Mola, located in the southeastern part of La Mola.

The route ends with spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea at Punta Roja.

The bike ride lasts 45 minutes, the hike 135 minutes and the distance to be covered is 9 kilometers, the level of the route is easy.

Route 29:
El Pilar De La Mola - La Mola Lighthouse

  • Distance: 2.8 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 35 minutes
  • By bicycle: 10 minutes

If you reach the area of La Mola on one of the other routes that you can find on this page and you want to extend the walk, you can then start this other route that takes you from the center of the village of El Pilar to the lighthouse of La Mola.

On this route you can enjoy the rural environment of this area of the island of Formentera.

An easy 10-minute bike ride, 35 minutes of walking during which 2.8 kilometers are covered.

Route 30:
El Pilar De La Mola - Es Monestir

  • Distance: 2.7 km
  • Difficulty: medium
  • On foot: 45 minutes
  • By bicycle: 15 minutes

Leaving from the Plaza del Pilar de la Mola this route passes by the church of the Virgen del Pilar dating from 1784, declared of cultural interest in 1996.

The route culminates at Punta des Llençó, from where it is possible to see Eivissa.

This route passes through the area of Es Monestir, where the first monastery of Formentera (still disappeared) was built.

This is a medium-difficulty route that can be completed in 15 minutes by bicycle, 45 minutes on a 2.7-kilometer hike.

Route 31:
El Pilar De La Mola - Sa Cala

  • Distance: 1.5 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 20 minutes
  • By bicycle: 8 minutes

The green route 31 El Pilar de La Mola – Sa Cala runs in an agricultural and very rural environment, where you can appreciate the vineyards of the area, Eivissa and S’Espalmador, as well as the islets of Espardell and Espardelló, part of the Natural Park of Ses Salines de Ibiza and Formentera.

At the end of your journey you can enjoy the craft and art market of La Mola.

The journey is easy and takes 20 minutes on foot, 8 minutes by bicycle, the distance is 1.5 km.

Route 32:
Pla De La Mola

  • Distance: 12 km
  • Difficulty: easy
  • On foot: 185 minutes
  • By bicycle: 60 minutes

The last of the green routes is the longest of all, 12 kilometers that are completed in the plain of La Mola.

The route of this green route 32 Pla de La Mola is easy, so it is recommended to do it by bicycle as it is easily accessible terrain.

You can enjoy the Church of El Pilar de la Mola, El Molí Vell and the Lighthouse of La Mola.

This route is done in 185 minutes if you decide to hike, has some slope but is negligible, and the total distance is 12 km.
