Choosing the best places to visit in Formentera is no easy task. Around every corner lies some wonderful natural treasure that leaves visitors awestruck and eager to return year after year. Nevertheless, in this post we’ve tried to summarise the five must-do activities you can’t miss – the absolute highlights of Formentera that should be mandatory stops during your visit to this fantastic Mediterranean island. Let’s begin!
Ses Illetes Beach

If there’s one beach you can’t miss during your trip to Formentera, it’s Ses Illetes, considered one of the best beaches in the world. At about 500 metres long, you’ll enjoy fantastic turquoise, transparent waters that contrast perfectly with the pinkish hue created by the mix of coral and white sand. You’ll find this fantastic location in the north of the island, protected by Illa des Forn and Illa de Tramuntana, which explains why the waters are somewhat calmer here.
At this spectacular beach you’ll find all kinds of services, including umbrella and sunbed rentals, as well as opportunities for kayaking or paddleboarding.
Caló d’es Mort

Another of the island’s absolute highlights is undoubtedly Caló d’es Mort. This is one of Formentera’s most famous beaches and also one of the smallest and most hidden, measuring just about 20 metres long and 5 metres wide. It stands out for its fantastic rocky landscape and is one of the best spots for snorkelling.
However, if you want to secure a spot in this little paradise, you’ll need to lay your towel down first thing in the morning, as its small size and growing popularity make it one of the most crowded beaches.
Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse

Perched about 80 metres above sea level, we find another crown jewel: The Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse. This is one of Formentera’s emblems and the island’s only functioning lighthouse. However, visitors don’t have access to the interior.
The popularity of this tourist spot has grown significantly in recent years, particularly as an idyllic location to witness one of the island’s best sunsets.
Hippy Markets

If there’s another must-do that stands out on the island and attracts all tourists, it’s the hippy markets. You’ll find these weekly at different locations as they move around. The most famous one you can’t miss is the La Mola Hippy Market, held on Wednesdays and Sundays at Pilar de la Mola, where all products sold are handmade. Here you can see the complete list of Formentera’s markets.
Espalmador Island

Last but certainly not least, we have Espalmador Island, located north of Formentera. Although only accessible to s’Alga beach, it’s one of the island’s most iconic spots. You can go by boat as swimming across the Pas de s’Espalmador at Punta des Borronar beach isn’t possible due to strong currents during certain months of the year.
Do you still need more reasons to come and visit the best island in the entire Mediterranean?
