The Espalmador lagoon is a brackish water and mud lagoon located in the very center of the island of Espalmador. It is an interesting lagoon from an environmental and natural point of view.
No swimming allowed
Until a few years ago, it was common for tourists who came to the lagoon to bathe in its mud, which was believed to have benefits for the skin. Spoiler alert: this mud does not provide any benefits for the skin that cannot be achieved through a good diet and daily skincare.
Access to the mud in the lagoon is now prohibited and carries a fine of €1,000.
How to get to the lagoon
The only way to get to the lagoon is on foot, following the path that can be found on the northern part of s’Alga beach, the largest beach on the island of Espalmador.
The trail is clearly marked and it is forbidden to leave the designated areas.
Please note that the small wooded areas on the island of Esplamador are limited to small juniper forests, which grow very slowly in this dry environment close to the sea. Damage to these wooded areas would mean decades of waiting for them to fully recover.
