Estany des Peix is a small lagoon with a small opening to the sea just west of the town of La Savina.
It is a very shallow lagoon (no more than 3 meters at its deepest point) which, being almost closed off from the sea, offers very calm waters without any waves.
History of Estany des Peix
Historically, Estany des Peix has been used as an anchorage for shallow-draft boats, as it is connected to the sea by only a small inlet and is therefore protected from storms and winds that can be problematic for boats in the open sea or more exposed areas.
It has also always been used as a fishing area, and small drying lagoons for salt exploitation were built on the western side of the lagoon. These lagoons are now abandoned and unused.
On the east coast of the lagoon, Franco’s prison known as “Es Campament” was built, the remains of which can still be seen today.
You will probably pass along the entire southern shore of Estany des Peix to reach the Can Marroig area or the natural pools of Punta Pedrera.
