I’m Xevi, and all the photos and texts you find in AllFormentera have come from my camera or my keyboard. After living and working two summers in Formentera and falling in love with it (I still visit the island several times every year) one day I decided to put all the information in this project.

Church of Sant Ferran, Formentera

The church of Sant Ferran is one of the three churches in Formentera, along with the Pilar de la Mola and Sant Francesc. It is located in Formentera.

How to get to the Church of Sant Ferran?

The church is located in the center of the town of the same name, almost in the center of the island. The church of Sant Ferran is easy to find: it is in the main square of the village, meeting point for most visitors to the island.

History of the Church of Sant Ferran

The parish of Sant Ferran de Ses Roques was created in 1785, and its creation was quite uneven, since the population of the area was not settled in a specific place. This means that construction of the church did not begin until 1853. Its construction was completed in 1889, when the cemetery located on the same site was also inaugurated.

The population began to concentrate in this parish partly thanks to the church, gathering people from ses Roques and sa Punta.

During the Spanish Civil War, the church and parish of Sant Ferran suffered attacks because the Republicans attacked its religious symbols. In addition, it saw one of its bloodiest episodes, since this place was chosen by Franco’s regime to extrajudicially shoot leftist militants, who are buried in two mass graves: in the town cemetery and in the Pedrera de can Coix.

Visit the Church of Sant Ferran

Sant Ferran is a village with a special charm, is located in one of the most central places of Formentera, very well connected by road. Despite its good location, it is not a town focused purely on tourists, as in the case of Es Pujols.

This small church is the most modern and its saint gives its name to the village, its construction was completed in 1889. It has a double-sloped roof, a rectangular floor plan and a height of seven and a half meters. It is also covered with a barrel vault. It is located in a small square with palm trees, a location that conveys the tranquility of this village.
