Foradada de Barbaria Cave

The Cova Foradada de Barbaria is a cave or grotto located on the island of Formentera. It is one of the many caves located on the island and is undoubtedly the most famous of all. It has a circular entrance on the ground, where you descend with a ladder, and at the end of the cave you will find a natural opening to the cliff, as if it were a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

What is the Cova Foradada de Barbaria like?

The Cova Foradada has two openings: one is the entrance and the other is a natural balcony overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It has an elongated shape and is about 15 meters long.

The height of the grotto allows you to walk upright all the time, but near the entrance the height is somewhat reduced. Be careful with your head.

Where is the Cova Foradada de Cap de Barbaria?

The Cova Foradada is located in a very visited area: Cap de Barbaria. It is undoubtedly the most beautiful, magical and visited of all the caves of Formentera, for its easy access and location.

The cave is located about 100 meters west of the lighthouse of Barbaria, and has a beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea and the sunset. That is why the Cova Foradada is one of the places chosen by many people to enjoy the sunset in Formentera.

If you want to enter the Cueva Foradada de Barbaria you can do so during a visit to the Faro de Barbaria, as they are next to each other.

How to get to the Cova Foradada de Barbaria?

The cave is located in the Cap de Barbaria area, so you must follow the road to the parking area.

Remember that since 2017 access to the Faro de Barbaria is restricted and you will have to park in the enabled parking lot and walk for 1.7 kilometers (about 25 minutes) in order to reach the Cap de Barbaria area.

Once you are at the lighthouse, to get to the Cova Foradada you will not have to make many turns: look for an opening or hole in the ground, 50 meters from the lighthouse, protected by a small rope fence. Inside the hole you will see a ladder that is the entrance to the cave. Enter with caution.
