The old marés stone quarries in the Punta Pedrera area, in the protected area of Can Marroig, are ancient quarries where marés stone was extracted for many years to build many of the old constructions that you can see today in Formentera, such as the well-known towers of Formentera.
After being abandoned, the sea flooded all the lower-lying hollows, creating a series of beautiful natural pools.
If you want to know more about this stone, you can take a look at our post on marés stone and its uses.
The landscape in this area of Formentera
You can see the cuts in the rock left by the stonecutters and quarry workers after extracting the blocks of marés.
Sea erosion has also created a large cave in the bay known as “Es racó des Moro.”
How to get to the natural pools of Punta Pedrera
It is not possible to get there by car. You will have to park your car in the picnic area of the Can Marroig estate and from there walk about 10 or 15 minutes northwest.
If it’s summer and hot, remember to bring water with you, as well as shoes for walking on rocks.
The natural pools at Punta Pedrera are a great place to enjoy snorkeling.
