Location

I’m Xevi, and all the photos and texts you find in AllFormentera have come from my camera or my keyboard. After living and working two summers in Formentera and falling in love with it (I still visit the island several times every year) one day I decided to put all the information in this project.

Es Ca Marí Beach (Migjorn)

This area of Migjorn beach is known as “Es Ca Marí”, and is well known and loved by both tourists and permanent residents of Formentera.

Description of Es Ca Marí

The beach of Es Ca Marí is a somewhat more frequented area of Migjorn if we compare it with its neighboring areas of Es Mal Pas and Es Pi des Català, where the influx of bathers is almost nil. The reason why the beach of Es Ca Marí has more affluence is that the access to it is signposted, asphalted and the parking areas are diverse, therefore it is easy to arrive in private vehicle.

The beach of Es Ca Marí has a hippie vibe and you find nudist bathers mixed with textiles. The area of Es Ca Marí is a sandy beach interrupted in some areas by rocks, approximately 1,300 meters long. The width varies from 15 to 5 meters, with some areas where there is hardly any space between the rocks and the water. Accumulations of posidonia can be found in various nooks and crannies or during the first few meters of water.

Access

To reach this area, from the main road of Formentera you must turn right towards Es Ca Marí, approximately 500 meters after leaving the village of Sant Ferran. If you are coming from La Mola, the junction will be on the left before reaching Sant Ferran, in a curve to the right. Once you have turned, you must travel a straight road of approximately one kilometer in length.

Since the beach is quite extensive, there are several areas that can be accessed.

Access Center

Just go to the end of the main road, Es Ca Marí avenue, and you will find a parking lot with 12 to 15 parking spaces. The parking lot is located next to the Kiosko Ca Marí.

West access

The westernmost area of Es Ca Marí can be reached by following the signs to Hotel Gecko and then Kiosko 62. A few meters before reaching the Kiosko 62 beach bar there are two parking lots where about 15 or 20 cars can fit, although the road is in pretty bad condition.

East Access

The easternmost part of Ca Marí can be reached by following the signs to the Hotel Insotel Formentera Playa or South Beach Club.

Origin of its name

Es Ca Marí is an administrative division of the island of Formentera. The name Ca Marí refers to the small urbanized area in this area, which has about 2000 hotel beds between apartments, houses and hotels.

In Balearic Catalan un ca marí translates as “sea dog”, this is a dogfish: a species of shark very common in all temperate zones of the world, including the Mediterranean Sea. Dogfish meat is fit for human consumption and here in Formentera it used to be consumed dried.
