Location

I’m Xevi, and all the photos and texts you find in AllFormentera have come from my camera or my keyboard. After living and working two summers in Formentera and falling in love with it (I still visit the island several times every year) one day I decided to put all the information in this project.

Cavall d’en Borràs Beach

The Cavall d’en Borràs beach is located within the Illetas area, and is the closest beach to La Savina (in fact, you can reach it walking from La Savina).

Description of Es Cavall d’en Borràs beach

Playa d’en Cavall d’en Borràs is a long and narrow beach, almost perfectly straight. It is one of the best known of the island for being close to the port of La Savina and having good access on foot, by public transport or private vehicle. For that reason it is the first place where many of the tourists who visit Formentera for a single day or with the boats of organized excursions from Ibiza go. Es Cavall d’en Borràs is the southernmost beach of Illetas, and although technically and geographically it is not within the peninsula of Illetas, it is included due to its proximity.

There is a pedestrian path that runs parallel to the shore and begins south of the Playa des Cavall d’en Borràs, and by which you can walk to the port of La Savina in about 20-30 minutes. You can also cycle along this path and from the port reach this beach or go to the other beaches of Illetas.

This road, now adapted to pedestrians, was formerly the connection used by a system of rails where the wagons loaded with salt from the salt mines circulated to the port of La Savina. With the cessation of salt mining in the 1980s, the road was adapted for pedestrian use.

Waters of Cavall d’en Borràs beach

The waters of Cavall d’en Borràs are calm, with weak waves. Pay attention to the slightly more intense swells that occur every 30 to 40 minutes, due to the passage of boats bound for Ibiza, as they can get all your stuff wet if you are too close to the shore. These waves are caused by the marine traffic between Formentera and Ibiza, when a large ship of the ones that connect both islands passes several hundred meters from the beach, since the port of La Savina is located nearby. The depth increases gradually and slowly. At about 10 to 15 meters from the shore, the water is already covered.

The sunset from Cavall d’en Borràs

Sunset at Cavall d’en Borràs beach

Playa d’es Cavall d’en Borràs offers spectacular views of the sunset of Formentera, perhaps the best of the whole island. It is the closest beach to Ibiza and the islet of Es Vedra, so when the sun disappears over the horizon the dark silhouette of the neighboring islands in the foreground impresses and creates a dream postcard. It is common for ships to anchor there.
