The most famous flea market in Formentera
The Mercadillo de la Mola of Formentera has become over the years a classic of the island on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons.
History of the Mercadillo de la Mola
The market was born as a result of the hippy movement that came to Ibiza and later settled in Formentera during the ’70s and ’80s. Several of these visitors became residents, began to make objects with materials extracted from the island and thought it was a good idea to try to sell their creations. This is how the Mercadillo de la Mola was created in 1984, spontaneously and with just a handful of stalls.
What no one expected is that what began in a totally improvised way would become after 30 years an inseparable part of the popular and commercial culture of Formentera. Although some raw materials are imported from abroad, all the artisans present at the Mercadillo de la Mola manufacture and/or finish their products on the island. The Mercadillo de la Mola is regulated to ensure that the products and creations are unique and of high quality.
