The most famous flea market in Formentera
The Mercadillo de la Mola of Formentera has become over the years a classic of the island on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons.
History of the Mercadillo de la Mola
The market was born as a result of the hippy movement that came to Ibiza and later settled in Formentera during the ’70s and ’80s. Several of these visitors became residents, began to make objects with materials extracted from the island and thought it was a good idea to try to sell their creations. This is how the Mercadillo de la Mola was created in 1984, spontaneously and with just a handful of stalls.
What no one expected is that what began in a totally improvised way would become after 30 years an inseparable part of the popular and commercial culture of Formentera. Although some raw materials are imported from abroad, all the artisans present at the Mercadillo de la Mola manufacture and/or finish their products on the island. The Mercadillo de la Mola is regulated to ensure that the products and creations are unique and of high quality.

Perfect day to visit the town
The excuse of the Mercadillo de la Mola is perfect to visit the charming village of El Pilar de la Mola. On market days the different bars and terraces of the town are filled with visitors who sit down to have a drink. Take advantage of your visit to the market to visit the village and get to know a part of the island of Formentera that does not usually appear in travel guides.
In the Mercadillo de la Mola we will find many craft stalls, each one specialized in the manipulation of a different material. We will find artisans specialized in the manufacture of jewelry, accessories, clothing, costume jewelry, stones, leather, metals, wood… All products are handmade one by one.
If we want to eat something in the Mercadillo de la Mola there are several stalls where crêpes, sweets or juices are prepared.
To liven up the market evenings, several local and foreign groups offer live concerts in the center of the square where the market is set up. Once you have found the souvenir you were looking for, you can stop to enjoy the rhythms that the invited groups offer to the attendees.
