Beach/Coast of Es Carnatge
The beach of Es Carnatge is not a beach itself, but is called “Es Carnatge” to the entire north coast of Formentera, which runs from Cala en Baster to the area of Ses Platjetes.
Although it may not seem so, in this area of difficult access and semi-hidden roads we can find some corners of great beauty and totally deserted of people and tourists.
Description of the coast of Es Carnatge
The coast of Es Carnatge extends along the northern part of the isthmus of Formentera that connects the plateau of the mola with the western plateau where Sant Francesc is located. In other words, the coast of Es Carnatge is the “north coast” of the beach or coast of Migjorn (which faces south).
This is a mostly rocky coastal area with small cliffs that never reach a maximum height of 2 or 3 meters. This means that you can walk down to any part of Es Carnatge as long as you access it on foot (there are no direct paths that take you to the coast).
Storms and sea currents, more intense during the winter months, can accumulate sand in some places and remove it from others. So that means that sometimes in this area of Formentera small beach-like areas are formed and may disappear from one summer to another. And that’s the magic: every year a different coastline 😉
How to get to the area of Es Carnatge
The easiest way to access this coastal area of Formentera is to get to Cala en Baster and then from there walk eastward along the coast. In a few minutes walk you will have gone 500 meters or more and surely you will have found a corner where to put your towel in this so little crowded area of Formentera.
Another way to find a corner where you can have a swim in the area of Es Carnatge is to reach the area of Ses Platjetes, in Es Caló, and from there walk westwards following the coast along the small cliffs.
Also along the PM-820 road that leads to La Mola there are some roads that lead almost straight to the coast, but some are roads that lead to private homes. If you want to try one of these roads we recommend that you first take a look at Google Maps in satellite layer to make sure you don’t end up on private property.
Perfect area for nudism
Since the coast of Es Carnatge is very uncrowded, it is the perfect place to enjoy a day at the beach without a swimsuit.
You can enjoy snorkeling
Being a rocky coastal area, Es Carnatge is also the perfect place to enjoy some nice snorkeling sessions. Among its nooks and crannies and hiding places you will find lots of marine life, octopus and fish hiding among the rocks.
