Formentera limits access to Illetas

Access control to Illetas, Formentera

Since the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, just over a year ago, our daily lives have been affected, with tourism being one of the most affected sectors, which has had a direct impact on the economies of many countries.

In this post we will see the measures taken by the government to close a part of the island, avoiding parties on beaches in order to protect the natural park.

The Formentera Council has decided to preventively close the Illetes area from 6 p.m. All access points to the Ses Salines Natural Park of Eivissa and Formentera, specifically in the Illetes area, will not allow access after 6 p.m. This measure is established due to the crowds resulting from the uncontrolled parties that occur on Illetas beach, Es Cavall d’en Borràs beach and the Ses Salines Natural Park in Formentera.

The decree states that vehicle traffic to the area will be limited. People will be able to leave but not enter, with the exception of those who have a reservation at an establishment in the area.

How will the rule be managed?

The Consell is preparing a special operative to deal with this situation. It has the support of state security bodies and forces, such as the Local Police de Guardia Civil.

End deterioration and waste

Promising that specific points will be reinforced during the week, the aim is to address the problem of the sale of alcoholic beverages at sea, street sales from unauthorized vendors, prevent parties on the beach or from boats from persisting, and to organize the so-called “party boats”.

Measures to stop COVID infections

Other measures that will be applied are inspections of businesses by the Emergency Service, to verify compliance or not with health regulations in relation to COVID. Also stop possible sources of drinking and crowding on the island, specifically in the core of Es Pujols and Sant Ferran.

Tourists will have information posters available on the Tourism website, on the Consell de Formentera website, and physically at the Formentera Tourist Information Offices. They will be available in several languages, Spanish, English and Catalan, so that everyone, natives and foreigners, are aware of the measures.

The Council insists that we must all be clear that the tourism sector is only being reactivated in a very timid way. Businessmen, and most shops, as well as the residents of Formentera, who make a living from this sector, have gone through very difficult times. Hence, they should be the first to preserve compliance with the provisions of the norm.

After 2 years living and working in Formentera, I wanted to put all the knowledge I had about the island into a multi-language online directory that would offer as much information as possible to anyone interested in visiting the island. I still visit the island frequently to visit friends, enjoy the magnificent surroundings and find out first hand what's new in terms of accommodation and businesses to keep the website up to date.
