Pilar de la Mola Church
The church of La Mola is located in the village of El Pilar de la Mola, in Formentera, and is one of the three churches of Formentera. If you go to the town of El Pilar de la Mola this is one of the attractions to visit.
History of the church of La Mola
This small parish was built in 1784, at the request of the inhabitants of La Mola. Until then, the only functioning church was Sant Francesc, and the inhabitants of La Mola had to travel there for worship.
However, the church of Pilar de la Mola was not the first church in this area. In fact, there is evidence of a monastery of Augustinian monks as early as 1235: the one known as Es Monestir or Monestir de Santa Maria. This monastery appears in many engravings and documentation of the time, but unfortunately, after several disputes between the archbishoprics of Girona, Tarragona, and the descendants of William of Montgrí, it ended up disappearing. He is currently still missing and it is not known exactly where he was.
Returning to the church of the Pilar de la Mola, a peculiarity of this church is that it has a porch to protect the entrance, and in 1996 was declared of cultural interest of Formentera.
